Gemini Can Use Your Google Photos. Here Is What That Means

Gemini can use Google Photos to understand people, places and relationships. Here is what Google says happens to that information.

Google Photos does not just contain pictures. It contains a remarkably accurate outline of your life.

Who you spend time with. Where you travel. Which faces keep appearing. Where those faces were, and when. One photo says very little. Fifteen years of photos say rather more.

Google now lets eligible users connect Google Photos to Gemini through Personal Intelligence. The feature can make Gemini more useful by giving it personal context. It can find a holiday photo, understand who your family members are and create images that include you or the people close to you.

That is clever. It is also worth understanding before you press yes.

What Gemini can learn from Google Photos

Google says connected apps can help Gemini build insights about you, your relationships and the people in your world.

For Google Photos, that can include your interests, the people in your photos, your relationship to them and the places you have visited. Google also says this can involve connecting faces with location data and timestamps.

In plain English, Gemini is not only finding a beach photo. It can understand that you were at that beach, who was there with you and how those people may be connected to you.

That is the product. The personal part is not an accidental side effect.

Does Google train Gemini on your photos?

Here is the important distinction.

Google says it does not train generative AI models directly on the raw images or audio in your Google Photos collection. Your entire camera roll is not simply poured into a training set.

But that is not the end of the answer.

When Google Photos is connected to Gemini, summaries, generated media and inferences based on relevant photos may become part of your Gemini Apps activity. If Keep Activity is turned on, Google says that activity can be used to improve its services, including training generative AI models.

Google also says a subset of connected app data may be reviewed by humans. In normal cases reviewers see interactions, summaries and inferences rather than the original photos. Different rules can apply when you submit feedback or Google investigates abuse or harm.

So the honest answer is not "Google trains on every photo". It is this: what Gemini learns and creates from your photos can help improve Google's AI.

That sentence is less dramatic. It is also harder to wave away.

What you can control

Personal Intelligence is optional and availability varies by account and country. You can choose which apps connect to Gemini, turn off Keep Activity and delete Gemini Apps activity.

There is one detail worth remembering. Disconnecting Google Photos does not automatically delete information already saved in Gemini Apps activity. Google says you must manage that activity separately.

Settings matter. So does knowing what the settings actually do.

The VaultBox line

VaultBox takes a clearer line.

Your photos are encrypted before upload. No one else but you sees them. They are not training material, and we do not need to understand your relationships to store your memories.

Your photos can say a lot about your life. They should not have to say it to us.
